Hazmat Technician Refresher Training Pre-Requisite Material NFPA 472 states that technicians must complete all of the competencies of the technician standard as well as all of the competencies of the Operations level standard. Technicians therefore must complete the following Operations material: · OPS Module 2: Identifying the Hazard · OPS Module 3: Predicting Behavior Hazmat Technician Refresher Training Module 1: Terminology Review
This session consists of an online PowerPoint that is narrated and that discusses numerous terms that are listed in NFPA 472. It is recommended that you download the quiz and complete it as the PowerPoint progresses. This is huge file (44 mb), so it will take a while to download. This module should take you approximately one hour to complete.
Hazmat Technician Refresher Training Module 2: Terminology Review and Miscellaneous Info
This session consists of a narrated PowerPoint that discusses the balance of the terms listed in NFPA 472. In addition, miscellaneous topics are covered that include capacity markings on transport vessels, decontamination, and radioactive labels.

During this one hour session, these hazards will be reviewed and the available meters will be discussed that can identify these hazards. In addition, an overview will be given of new technologies and metering equipment. 09:00 – 11:00 Meter Use and Sampling Practical NFPA 472 states that the technician shall DEMONSTRATE the sampling of solids, liquids, and gases. This session will consist of numerous solid, liquid, and gas samples that will be tested using the available metering equipment. 11:00 – 12:00 Incident Critique and IAP NFPA 472 states that, given scenarios, the technician shall develop a site safety plan and describe necessary safety considerations. In addition, the technician shall assist in a debriefing and critique of an incident and document an incident. During this session, the students will discuss incidents that the BCoFD Team has run during the previous year and develop a “post incident” IAP. The effectiveness of the control measures will also be discussed. GROUP 1 Research / ADASHI / Chemical Reaction Databases NFPA 472 states that the technician shall gather response information from resources beyond the ERG and MSDS and interpret hazard and response information pertaining to that research. Students will use the NIOSH Pocket Guide and other databases to gather information pertaining to various chemicals. NFPA 472 also states that the technician shall use modeling software to determine various exposure values and make determinations about response actions using that equipment. The shift research specialist will review the ADASHI software with the students and coach them on the use of the program. GROUP 2 Suit Practical / Leak Kits / Control Measures NFPA 472 states that the technician shall be able to demonstrate use of CPC / PPE. In addition, the technician shall choose the appropriate tools and demonstrate the use of those tools relative to product control, leak control, etc. During this session, the students will perform pre-entry screening and then don PPE.
