The refresher for 2008 consists of four modules that can be completed at your pace using the below tools and information.  The deadline for the completion of each module is listed under the module's heading.  The instructions for what needs to be completed is also listed under the headings.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the HAZMAT TEAM at 410-887-4564.

MIEMSS Continuing Education for Completion of the 2008 HAZMAT OPERATIONS REFRESHER

Upon completion of the ENTIRE program, you can complete continuing education applications to apply for MIEMSS credit for this course.  Completed cards should be sent to the Fire Rescue Academy.

Module 1: Collecting Hazard and Response Information

This module must be completed by February 1st, 2008.  The module consists of the following steps:

  1. Review the 25 minute PowerPoint that is available via the following link:

Note: Due to the narration, this is a large file.  It may take a minute to download, depending on your connection and data speed.  Feel free to save the file to a training folder on your computer so it can be re-opened, if necessary.

  1. Download the MSDS for Ethylene Oxide that is available at the following link:

  1. Download and complete the Job Performance Sheet (JPR) that has tasks and questions specific to the material in Module 1.  The document is located at the following link:

  1. Send the completed JPR sheet from Step 3 to Station 14 by the due date of 2/1/08. 

Station officers should maintain rosters of completion of the JPRs.  The JPR sheets will be maintained at Station 14 until al of the modules are complete and then they will be sent to the FRA for long term storage.


Module 2: Identifying the Hazard

This module must be completed by March 1st, 2008.  The module consists of the following steps:

  1. Review the 21 minute PowerPoint that is available via the following link:

  1. Download the Pesticide Label at the following link.  You will use this pesticide label to answer questions on the JPR Sheet:

  1. Download and complete the Job Performance Sheet (JPR) that has tasks and questions specific to the material in Module 2.  The document is located at the following link:

  1. Send the completed JPR sheet from Step 3 to Station 14 by the due date of 3/1/08. 

Station officers should maintain rosters of completion of the JPRs.  The JPR sheets will be maintained at Station 14 until al of the modules are complete and then they will be sent to the FRA for long term storage.


Module 3: Predicting the Behavior of a Material

This module must be completed by April 1, 2008.  The module consists of the following steps:

  1. Download the Job Performance Requirement Sheet that is titled Predicting the Behavior.  This will be used as you progress through the PowerPoint.  You can write your answers directly on this sheet.  It is available for download at the following link:

  1. Download the MSDS for each scenario that will be used in the Module 3 PowerPoint:

  1. Acquire an Emergency Response Guide.  They are located at your fire station or available online at the below link:

  1. Download and view the PowerPoint titled "Predicting the Behavior".  This is a large file and may take a few moments to download.  It is recommended that you save the PowerPoint to a training folder on your computer so it can be easily re-opened, if necessary.  It is available at the following link:

  1. Complete the JPR sheet and mail the document through the interoffice mail to Station 14.

Module 4: Personal Protective Equipment

This module must be completed by May 1, 2008.  The module consists of the following steps:
